Premature coating failure occurs primarily due to rust, mill scale, weld scale, and organic soils not being removed prior to coating application.  We will review critical variables that must be considered when evaluating coating pretreatment alternatives.  We will then compare and contrast conventional inorganic soil removal methods with new coating pretreatment processes now available.  Ease of use, economics, safety, equipment maintenance costs, and labor will show why the newer methods and chemistries offer superior performance.  A case study will be used to demonstrate the pros and cons of the new technology.  If excessive time is spent grinding or sandblasting rusty pitted parts, removing weld smut, heat scale and laser scale this session will be beneficial.
